Moreover, this brings companies quite tangible benefits: increased labor productivity, reduced defects and, as a result, increased revenue. Analysts at Mordor Intelligence have calculated that by the end of 2024, the global market for industrial automation software will reach $38 billion. If the current annual growth rate (7.9%) is maintained, this figure will increase to $55 billion by 2029. In general, the global automation software market will exceed $76 billion by 2030, according to Acumen Research and Consulting.
Automation of production has affected various branches of industry and economy. Such solutions are relevant both for high-tech spheres (mechanical engineering, electronics production, space and aviation industry), and for food production, as well as the pharmaceutical industry.
The leading positions in terms of both the creation and consumption of automation solutions are occupied by the countries of Europe, the USA and the states of the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, it is the latter that is the most dynamically developing market, which is explained by a combination of high demand caused by the industrial revolution in the region, the availability of highly qualified personnel among both engineers and software developers, as well as significant government support.
Until recently, the pace of automation and implementation of "smart" solutions in Russia lagged somewhat behind the global average. Thus, in 2023, only about 16% of Russian enterprises had a high level of automation and digitalization. However, one cannot fail to note the gradual improvement of the situation, associated, among other things, with the attention and support of the state. The fact is that in the current conditions, the importance of ensuring technological sovereignty and increasing labor productivity has grown significantly. Therefore, the authorities actively support both Russian software developers and system integrators, as well as companies ready to implement "smart" solutions in their work.
Perhaps the most serious challenge facing the automation and smart manufacturing market is the standardization and unification of existing solutions. The accumulation and expansion of the range of various digital tools has been going on for the past 20-30 years. As a result, IT products based on different platforms could operate at one enterprise. For Russia, the issue of unified standards became relevant as a result of unprecedented sanctions pressure, which required the search for new solutions. The result of work to overcome such challenges in our country was the approval of the preliminary national standard PNST 864-2023 "Smart (SMART) standards. General provisions", which entered into force on February 2, 2024.
One of the advantages of automation and the implementation of "smart" solutions is the ability to create a single space for solving various problems: from production management to monitoring employees' working hours across the entire business, even if the system elements (for example, workshops or production facilities) are located in different cities and countries. The ultimate goal is to create a seamless digital landscape across the entire company or even industry. And here the need for the aforementioned standardization and development of unified approaches arises.
In 2023, the current trend was predictive systems that allow you to calculate various patterns. This year, this trend has developed: predictive systems have been replaced by prescriptive systems. Based on advanced algorithms and machine learning principles, they make it possible to understand the operating principle of a particular pattern, which allows you to find the most rational solution. Simply put, if predictive systems could find the answer to the question "who is to blame?", then prescriptive systems can answer the question "what to do?"
Of course, the key one is the still high cost of such solutions, which limits their availability primarily for small and medium businesses, as well as for enterprises in developing countries. The solution may be the development of flexible systems built on a modular principle and allowing the purchase of only those modules that a specific customer needs right now.
Another equally serious problem is the personnel issue. Moreover, this concerns both training and retention of qualified specialists in the field of implementation and use of automated production management systems. The issue of personnel retention is especially relevant for Russia, where the labor market has now become a candidate's market, with the opportunity to choose the most attractive conditions.
