By 2030, Russia should enter the top 25 countries in the world in terms of the number of industrial robots. This ambitious task was set for industry players by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade has set a target of 94 thousand robots at enterprises by 2030. It follows that about 1,500 robots need to be produced monthly. We talk about the robotization process in Russia, important industry statistics, development prospects, and the conclusions of experts within the framework of the annual international scientific and practical forum "Robotics, Intelligence of Machines and Mechanisms" (RIMM).
According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), the number of industrial robots installed worldwide has exceeded 500,000 for the second year. The figure for 2023 is 600,000 units, with Asia leading the region. Every second robotic complex was implemented in China, followed by Japan. In terms of robotic density, the leaders are the pioneer countries that automated production work back in the 1980s and 1990s: South Korea (1,012 robots per 10,000 employees), Singapore (730), and Germany (415).
Experts consider the domestic market of industrial robots to be developing. The density indicator at enterprises in 2023 was only 11 robots per 10 thousand people. And five years earlier, about ten large players in the industry purchased robotic solutions for the needs of serial production. Speaking about the current situation, the main growth point for robotics in Russia is personnel training. The shortage of specialists in the context of high competition with Asian manufacturers gives companies an incentive to optimize processes through automation.
An important step could be standardized solutions for standard manufacturing tasks that are often a bottleneck. These include certain types of welding, loading parts into a machine, and palletizing.
Thus, the definition of similar problems by industry, development and establishment of serial production of robotic products was implemented by the company TECHNORED. The specialists proposed a solution accessible to a number of enterprises, and the implementation period was up to seven days instead of six months. A mass robotization market was formed, where the main customer was medium and small businesses.
According to the study by the Commonwealth of Manufacturers TSEKH, 75% of the companies that took part consider automation and robotization as a promising tool for developing their business. At the same time, about 30% noted that a lack of financing hinders them on the path to automation.
In January of this year, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced a decision to allocate more than ₽15 billion by 2030 to create over 30 robotics development centers in all federal districts of the Russian Federation, of which approximately half will be allocated during 2025-2027. The creation of the centers is part of the national project "Development of Industrial Robotics and Automation of Production."
As the expert community notes, one of the priority tasks of the centers will be the creation of standard production cells based on robotic equipment that can be scaled to other enterprises.
The planned support measures also include:
— compensation of discounts on the acquisition of robotic solutions;
— preferential leasing and lending;
— preferential loans from the Industrial Development Fund;
— investment contracts;
— operation of robotics development centers in the regions;
— training in robotization and automation processes for technical specialists and enterprise managers;
— additional education programs that will help update the fundamental knowledge of graduates to meet changing market requirements.
On February 7 , the forum "Robotics, Intelligence of Machines and Mechanisms" was held at the site of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation . The organizers are the Consortium of Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems together with the Financial University with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia.
The section "Robotics Components" was organized within the framework of RIMM , moderated by Zakhar Kondrashov, CEO of JSC "NIIMA "Progress". The co-moderator was Maxim Gurbashkov, CEO of InnoDrive LLC, member of the Board of the Robotics Consortium.
All speakers at the event discussed available solutions in the components section, technology development issues, and shared their vision of the components market. Key points from the section participants:
1. It is necessary to create a completely domestic component base before 2030. The components must be economically justified for consumers and produced in a short time.
2. To maintain competitive prices, it is important to enter foreign markets, which entails the issue of safety, standardization and regulation of technologies.
3. The industry needs a consolidated opinion of market participants to unify electronic components and to adapt robotics support measures to the needs of the component industry.
4. It is important to localize production, which will reduce dependence on foreign colleagues, as well as implement cloud solutions for easier management of production processes.
5. It is necessary to develop legislation that will address issues of liability for the actions of robots, protection of personal data and security.
6. One of the key limiting factors for the development of the sector is the lack of sustainable mass demand for Russian solutions, as well as distrust of Russian solutions on the part of consumers.
7. The situation can be improved by increasing the volume of work with Russian equipment in educational institutions and developing Open Source projects using local technologies.
8. The industry is experiencing intense competition with Asian manufacturers. According to a number of experts, the problem can be solved by introducing quotas and barriers to imports of intermediate components and final robotics products for volumes exceeding 25% of imports.
9. Integrator companies have the necessary expertise to quickly correct inaccuracies in the operation of robotic solutions.
10. The creation of a common register of developers and manufacturers of components and robotics will facilitate the growth of the market.
11. For effective training of personnel, it is necessary to create conditions for mutually beneficial partnership between educational institutions and businesses.
12. The work of competence centers is important for market consolidation.
